Please describe the project specifications

The client came to us saying they had "upholstery envy" after we redid the cockpit of their neighbor's boat the previous year. Following this initial conversation, the clients stated they wanted a diamond pattern in all of the seats, and to use a material that is not a typical vinyl. We guided the client to Spradling Silvertex, which has unique texture and colors that worked very well with the existing carpet and the enclosure we built for them the previous year. One of the biggest challenges this project posed was incorporating the diamond stitching around all of the middle sections of the seat backs without having the diamonds run off as they go through curves in the seat. To make this possible, we figured out a way to have the diamonds curve with the material to ensure that they run in a consistent line around the bends. This was a fun project and the clients were thoroughly pleased with the finished project.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Most of the time diamonds that run through curves are not kept in a straight line as they go through the curve. Fabricators will either cut the diamond pattern into sections, or let the diamond run off through the curve. I really wanted to make sure that the diamonds stay consistent throughout the project, with the tops ending at the pull-down and having equal spacing through the curves. After a lot of testing, we figured out a way to allow the diamonds to run through curved pieces without having the shape be deformed. The U-shaped lounger was especially challenging, but we were able to get it to work. One of our colleagues previously told us that the "juice isn't work the squeeze" when it comes to running diamond patterns through curves, but we disagree. This project turned out great. I just wish we could have gotten better pictures after they took the winter cover off.
