A custom canopy was designed and fabricated to cover a Trash Interceptor for the City of Newport Beach. This advanced, sustainably powered system actively collects and removes floating trash before it reaches the ocean, helping to keep the bay clean and protect Southern California’s coastal ecology.
The canopy spans approximately 3,018 square feet and is made from vibrant Spring Green Serge Ferrari 502 fabric. It was manufactured as a single piece with dozens of precision-cut openings for solar attachments. The membrane was secured using perimeter grommets and rope and features a custom Newport Beach sail logo.

What is unique or complex about the project?
The membrane was fabricated as a single, large-scale piece, presenting logistical challenges during handling and installation. Dozens of precisely measured cutouts were required for solar equipment, demanding exact alignment. The canopy was attached using perimeter grommets and rope lacing, requiring careful coordination to maintain both proper tension and a clean, finished look. Installation was further complicated by the need to work from scaffolding on a floating dock. Custom graphics were also applied, enhancing the project's visual identity and demonstrating how technical fabric architecture can combine function and aesthetics in a municipal sustainability effort. The result is a successful, decade-long project that now removes up to 80% of trash from the riverbed—while maintaining an attractive appearance.
