This design-build project by our company showcases a massive hybrid tension structure, fabricated with Architec 400 by PolyFab in shade slate gray. The 8,846 square foot structure required 288 yards of fabric, and overcoming the challenges of accessing the site in a high-security school was a major hurdle. The project's complexity was compounded by the need to navigate pool pumps, plumbing, and lifts, as well as setting the truss with a crane. The truss had to be fabricated as a single piece in the parking lot, then carefully transported and flown between two pre-set columns, with an extremely narrow tolerance required to ensure a precise fit. The truss had to be precision-engineered to withstand winds and catenary cables were used to prevent movement. The school’s main concern was meeting the requirement for shade coverage for the pool. Our team calculated the azimuth of the sun to ensure adequate shade coverage and included guide wires on the frame as a precautionary measure to prevent the fabric from falling into the pool, ensuring the safety of children below.
