Please describe the project specifications
What might have otherwise been simply a utilitarian structure at Sam Houston State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine was transformed into an architectural focal point through innovative facade screening. Designed by Kirksey Architecture, the parking garage elevates both function and form by integrating a custom tensile mesh system inspired by DNA sequencing in Sam Houston State University’s unique brand colors: orange, white, stone, denim and sky.
The design team leveraged the unique geometry of our tensioned mesh panels to interpret genetic patterning into a visual language that spans the facade. This sequence-based color arrangement references the medical focus of the college and animates the building with movement and depth. Beyond aesthetics, the lightweight, durable mesh panels provide natural ventilation and diffuse harsh sunlight. The modularity and cost-effectiveness of the system allowed for creative expression without compromising budget or performance.
