Please describe the project specifications
The Kilroy El Segundo walkway shade was a project that really pushed us to think creatively. Covering roughly 686 square feet, the framed structure includes ten steel columns and sixteen beams. Rather than a traditional shade design, the client requested something more artistic—something that played with shape and shadow. We approached it by layering multiple custom-shaped sails, arranged to allow light to filter through specific areas. The placement creates a mosaic-like shadow pattern that shifts throughout the day as the sun moves. It’s functional shade, but it also makes the walkway feel like part of a larger design story.
What made this job stand out was the challenge of taking a conceptual request—“make it feel like a mosaic”—and actually building it. The overlapping sails required exact measurements to maintain symmetry and color balance. The gaps were just as intentional as the coverage, which meant we had to be precise with every attachment point. But that’s what made the process memorable. Turning a simple pedestrian space into something expressive and functional is what we love doing, and this project is a great example of that.
