Please describe the project specifications
The project was a clean sheet design. Client had recently completed construction on a major events center in Joplin, MO. The center featured a large amphitheater stage that was part of a unique indoor/outdoor design that featured a large hangar door that separated the indoor stage from the outdoor stage. They wanted to install a large custom tensile canopy to cover the outdoor stage. They wanted a unique proprietary design that would add an artistic element yet be fully functional.
We contracted to provide the design based upon resume and company history alone. We entered a design and engineering contract with the non-profit prior to providing any detailed design. We worked hand in hand with the client and their architect over many month fine tuning the details of the canopy. Once the design was completed and signed off on, we were contracted to engineer, manufacture and install the state-of-art canopy.
The structure was a painted steel saddle-span type structure that utilized Ferrari TX-30 membrane, designed to provide brilliant appearance with a long warrantee and lifespan. The TX30 is designed to be a PVC alternative much more expensive and difficult to work with materials such as PTFE. Utilizing the TX30 provided the client with all of the benefits of those membranes at a fraction of the price.
The structure also featured a series of welded pipes and connection details to allow for the mounting of audio visual equipment including lighting and speakers. We worked in close contact with theater personnel on the layout and design of all of these attachments.
The structure was installed on a challenging site that included restrictions on how close we could work to the existing structure and the large hangar door that separated the two stage areas. We were able to deliver the completed project to the client in time for a grand opening in December 2024.
