Please describe the project specifications

Two Trees Development was building new housing and renovating the old Domino Sugar Factory into offices and an event space in Brooklyn NY. Using James Corner Field Operations as the landscape architect, the open site called Domino Square consisted of an oval hardscape space with surrounded plantings for summer music & film events and winter ice skating. We were asked to develop a seasonal shade system that in the winter would provide lighting for the skating ring. We came up with two different approaches, one a suspended ring with a cable net and demountable shade elements and the other more minimal cable net supported by three tensile structure masts. The Owner chose the second approach, and we developed a 6' wide cable net grid with a free form edge that supported mesh shade elements. The column structure consisted of painted steel. The cable net, and all the clamp plates including miscellaneous hardware were machined stainless-steel from Italy. We designed shade panels to be removed by one lift platform with 2 men, and the fabric panels are stored in custom boxes for the winter months adjacent to the site. The structure was used in the fall and set up again this spring and it creates both a public space and provides shade for the community on the waterfront of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The custom designed stainless plates and fittings are all permanent and support winter lighting for the ice-skating ring.
