Please describe the project specifications

This custom shade structure at Carvana’s Tempe corporate campus provides approximately 641 square feet of shade and is supported by four 10"x10" square tube columns. Designed as a resting area shade, the structure offers employees a welcoming outdoor retreat. A refined, geometric sail arrangement—anchored within a tight 28'x28' footprint—was adapted multiple times throughout the process to accommodate changing site constraints and underground utilities. The exaggerated twist and minimalistic layout makes a striking architectural statement while delivering essential sun protection.

What sets this build apart is its bold interwoven sail design—creating not only coverage, but an ever-changing play of shadows throughout the day. Installing such a clean, dramatic design with only four columns required strategic planning and precise execution, especially given the limitations presented by the site. The result is both elegant and functional, serving as a relaxing spot for employees while also becoming a visual highlight of the campus. Our favorite moment? Seeing how those two sails—expertly tensioned—cast layered, twisted shadows that subtly shift with the sun, giving life to the space hour by hour.
