A 3,570 sq ft shade canopy was fabricated to cover the spectator seating at J Serra Catholic High School’s pool. The structure features a sleek black frame constructed from metalized, powder-coated steel, supported by eight 17-foot-tall columns anchored to the existing structural slab.
Between columns, compression struts ensure structural rigidity and maintain a smooth, wrinkle-free fabric surface. From the tops of the columns, steel rafters extend outward, forming a clean rectangular profile that provides generous shade for spectators.
The fabric selected was Commercial Ninety-Five 340 FR for its durability, UV protection, and flame resistance. The fabric was tensioned with stainless steel cables and fittings to ensure lasting performance and to keep spectators cool and comfortable during events.

What is unique or complex about the project?
What makes this project stand out is that every phase was completed in-house—from the initial design concept and structural engineering to manufacturing, permitting, and onsite installation. Specific constraints, such as avoiding disruption to the existing seating area by not adding new footings, required careful coordination with existing site conditions. Sun angels also had to be considered to ensure adequate shade coverage without obstructing spectators’ views of the pool and scoreboard. Despite the challenges, the result is a striking structure that delivers both visual appeal and much-needed sun relief and comfort for spectators.
