Please describe the project specifications

Having operated Jibs restaurant at Hudson Yards in New York, beneath a temporary installation of an En-Fold retractable canopy system, the owner wanted an En-Fold® retractable canopy system to cover their outdoor patio at their new Cucina Alba restaurant in West Hollywood. The designers wanted the same soft color pallet and drapped fabric look that they achieved at Cucina Alba's New York location. To satisfy the need a secondary layer of decorative fabric was swagged beneath the primary, weather-tight fabric. The project required a search of nearly every fabric manufacturers line of fire rated outdoor fabrics to find one that met all of the design criteria. The Tempotest® Awning Starscreen was the only fabric found that had the CAL Fire flammability certificate and was available in colors that matched the designer's intent.

At 52’-8 1/4” wide with 38’-8” of extension, the En-Fold® retractable canopy at Cucina Alba LA covers the entire patio dining area and bar, affording an enclosed outdoor space of approximately 2,038 square feet.

Obtaining the required approvals from the City building officials meant many rounds of redesign including a change to the width of the canopy after fabrication had already started. This change meant that the fabric beams needed to have about 5' cut from each end and the ends re-machined.

In the end, alternating yellow and white Tempotest® Awning Starscreen decorative fabric swags elegantly drape below the En-Fold® retractable canopy’s unique bi-axially tensioned fabric panels, adding to the overall feeling of dining in a sun-drenched villa courtyard in Tuscany.
