Please describe the project specifications

The UBS Art Basel Pop Up was a custom monosloping structure built in the heart of Art Basel Miami, at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. The 300 sq. ft. structure was supported by 10’ columns and blended into the floral ambience of the Botanical Gardens.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The purpose of this project was to create an activation space in support of UBS’s Planet art app. The client wanted a pop up space that captured the ambiance of the gardens, while also immersing fairgoers and art enthusiasts into what their signature art resource app was about. The activation also featured over 30 pieces that represented their “Fiction vs Reality” theme.

The client tasked us with developing a garden concept, while minimizing the aesthetic effect of metal components on the look. They also requested that the final build maximize use of natural light to make the pop up as inviting as possible.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The first challenge of this project was to design a structural framing that would allow the interior design to evoke a feeling of open space. This was accomplished by designing and fabricating a monoslope structure. The structure was cladded with glass on the sides to allow in as much natural light as possible, while the front and rear sides were filled with drywall and a central opening to satisfy branding and crowd movement goals.

The two gable ends were enclosed with White 22 Oz. Vinyl. A white “Celtic Cloth” Material was used for a roof liner treatment to hide as much of the interior roofing aluminum beams as possible. This cloth material was attached to the eave purlins with keder that was sewn on.

A parapet/valance structure was built on the front of the structure to support a hanging garden live wall, as well as a branded mesh banner. This too was accomplished utilizing keder sliding into the C-Channels of the parapet/valance framework.

The overall design was challenging due to the features the client required, while also complying with the strict local code requirements.

What were the results of the project?

The Pop Up was very successful, and attracted numerous Fairgoers during the week of Art Basel Miami. The client was very satisfied, and intends to utilize a similar structure for future activations.
