Please describe the project specifications
University of Iowa Dental College Science Building patio fabric shade structure fabricated and installed on existing steel substructure. Eight exterior fabric shade panels, measuring (4) 16’ x 5’ and (4) 9’ x 5’ with a footprint size of 26’ x 21’. We supplied and installed the mill finish continuous aluminum keder rail and stainless steel cable to the existing steel structure. The fabric is Ferrari Soltis Boulder 92-2171 with keder core on the two long sides and a cable pocket on the short sides. All hardware was stainless steel.
What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?
To provide shade to the students and faculty off the 4th floor balcony patio.
The college administrators want to host school events and functions for prospective and existing students on the shaded patio.
What is unique or complex about the project?
This project required our team to continuously monitor coordination with the steel subcontractor to ensure that all parts will mate appropriately before the fabric shade structure was fabricated. In addition, there was a tight turnaround timeframe due to previously scheduled events at the college.
What were the results of the project?
The client was pleased with the new addition of the shade structure for their 4th floor patio balcony. The students and faculty can now utilize the patio space during the hot summer months.
