Please describe the project specifications

Our company designed, manufactured, and installed a residential, retractable awning with a span of 26 feet, 3 inches and projection of 13 feet, 5 inches. The fabric used was Sunbrella 4796-0000, Beige / White. The dark brown semi-cassette fully encapsulates the fabric when the arms are fully retracted. A Somfy, 550R2 Sunea motor, with integrated manual override, was used to power this solution. The Sunea motor responds to a Somfy, Telis-1, handheld remote. The client may also operate the awning with a hand crank in the absence of electricity. Custom-made brackets were designed and manufactured by our company to accommodate this unusual situation.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The clients stopped using their deck area, because the glare and heat became too unbearable. They requested a retractable solution to create shade and add more usable living space at the press of a button. They also wanted the fabric to be shielded during times of non use.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Due to height limitations, a retractable awning of this scale could not be mounted to the wall. We offered to mount on the roof, but the clients declined. They did not want the contours of their Spanish-tile roofline to be interrupted by the presence of the retractable awning. We designed a fascia bracket solution that exceeded the clients desires while providing the necessary mounting height.

What were the results of the project?

We more than exceeded our clients' expectations. They added over 300 square feet of additional living space to their home during the times that space was really needed. They also reclaimed a lifestyle that had been previously lost due to harsh light and intense heat. Friends and family once again flocked to their deck to enjoy barbeques and social gatherings near the pool.
