This project features an outdoor seating area for Segafredo at Miami’s Bayside Marketplace. (11) Shade Sails were used on this project. (4) Colorful sails on top and (7) lower sails in white. These are supported by (10) 8 inch columns

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The client wanted an outdoor seating area that would be attractive and draw attention for guests to come to their cafe and enjoy drinks and light meals waterside. There are other outdoor eating areas, restaurants and cafes in the adjacent vicinity, so they wanted to create something that would attract patrons to their café. Segafredo is known for being refreshing and vibrant and they wanted their outdoor area to reflect that same concept.

What is unique or complex about the project?

For this project, the shade pattern was custom designed and considerable engineering was used. To fabricate these shade sails, according to the current building code, very large framing members were needed. Installation for the project could only be during the late evening to early morning hours. Massive footings were needed since the project is on the coastline. 8 inch columns were installed by lifting them in place with a crane 260 feet away. 5 inch and 6 inch cross members were carted to the area and installed with manual genie lifts, since the access for large equipment was not possible. Special plate connections were made for each post to accept the heavy chain and cable for the 11 Shade sails.

What were the results of the project?

The shade sails create a vibrant outdoor area where patrons coming to Miami's Bayside Marketplace can distiguish Segafredo from among other options and enjoy sitting and listening to outdoor music and enjoy the delicious food and tropical drinks or a great coffee. The area created by the sails can be relaxing in the afternoon or vibrant at night!
