Please describe the project specifications

Three rectangular tension sails supported by 10, 8” diameter steel columns.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The Elementary school wanted to cover their outdoor eating area and playground with fabric tension sails to provide shade and protection from water.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Though the design of the sails is a regular shape, there were issues with the soil and the foundations. Our team had to re-engineer the footers under the columns in order to reach the bedrock 4’-6” under the topsoil. We also had to accommodate for the height of the playground equipment under one of the sails. In addition, we had to work around the existing equipment because of regulations regarding the distances between the playground and the new columns.

What were the results of the project?

The finished product covers a playground and 20 tables for the lunch area. Given the long narrow nature of the space, the area becomes completely covered between the two walls on either side, protecting young children from sun exposure.
