Please describe the project specifications

In 2015 our company designed and constructed a three story tall temporary structure for the Breeders Cup in Lexington, KY. This structure was 20 meters deep by 65 meters long with a 3-by-65-meter back walkway. Each level was divided into multiple hospitality suites that were enclosed with glass and flame retardant vinyl walls. The second and third floors had 5-meter balconies where guests could exit their suite onto a flat deck to view the race at their leisure.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

Ground space is usually an issue when it comes to building temporary structures. We have been installing double-decker tents for years and never thought we would need to go larger. Both the client and our company were faced with the dilemma of how to accommodate more hospitality suites without creating a larger footprint. The best option due to limited square footage was to keep designing and building vertically. We proposed the idea of a triple-decker to our client and they were sold. The next thing we knew a triple-decker was in the making.

What is unique or complex about the project?

It is the first triple-decker structure to ever be produced and installed in the US. The project was designed, engineered and completed in the span of 3 months. With this structure, our company was faced with many new challenges. We designed and manufactured a new scaffold system that would hold up to the massive down pressure that the structure applied to the floor. We used approximately 700,000 lbs. of concrete to anchor the tent to the ground. To prevent water from entering into the tent we had new storm walls made as well as vinyl gutters that would force the water to run-off away from the structure. The materials designed and utilized for the construction of the triple-decker can also be converted into a double-decker.

What were the results of the project?

The triple-decker at Breeders Cup in 2015 far exceeded our client’s requirements and expectations. Our structure was featured in IN TENTS magazine in December, 2015. We now have additional clients requesting a triple-decker structure for their next event. Our Company has since built a 15-by-55-meter triple-decker for the Dell Match Play in Austin, Texas. Currently we are constructing another 15-by-55-meter triple-decker for the Formula 1 race in Austin, Texas and a 15-by-45-meter at the Tour Championship in Atlanta, GA. We are quickly realizing that the ability to add the third floor is a welcomed addition to many upcoming venues.
