At Copper Sky, the client requested a visually striking cantilevered shade structure designed to maximize coverage without obstructing ground space. This custom shade features dramatic hypar sails made from COMM95 FR fabric, covering approximately 2,068 square feet and supported by seven 8"x8" square columns with cantilevered arms, standing between 8'-9" and 15'-2" in height. Designing this project meant carefully considering numerous factors: the client's shading goals, poolside foot traffic patterns, and above all, difficult site conditions—including tight hardscape constraints and underground utilities. These challenges led to multiple last-minute revisions to footing locations and layout. Despite the complexity, the structure delivers a seamless, floating appearance that complements its surroundings and provides ample, functional shade.

The combination of a cantilevered frame and a twisted hypar sail is what truly sets this structure apart. Achieving the precise geometry required balancing tension forces and carefully aligning each support element. The design had to remain lightweight and visually clean while standing up to both engineering demands and site limitations. One of the most rewarding aspects of the project was watching the sail take its final form—elevated in a perfect, sweeping twist that appears effortless, yet is the result of intensive planning and coordination.
