Please describe the project specifications

LOCATION: PLAZA MAYOR ANSOAIN/PAMPLONA- SPAIN

CLIENT: Ayuntamiento de Ansoain, Pamplona – Spain

AIMS OF THE PROJECT:
• Provide shade covering for the playground area of the community park of Ansoain in Pamplona–Spain.
• Protect from rain during the months of winter and strong sunlight during the summer months, resulting in all year around protection.

DESIGN:
Our design process was focused on achieving full covering of the playground area 540 sq . We aimed for the most aesthetic and elegant design with the least number of pillars and a diaphanous design with no middle support columns. We achieved the tallest height possible in order to not disturb any of the children’s swings or slides.
The shape of the membrane was designed to be in an arch form, which is ideal for matching the main aims of the project described above. By maintaining a pronounced curving of the radius we achieve both a majestic height and a double curvature of the membrane and thus comply with basic principles of Textile Architecture.
By designing the inclined arches on opposite directions we manage to maintain the balance of the forces transmitted between them and we use the Membrane as a tie system for the arches forming a single set known as “Membrane Structure”
The whole steel structure was welded and only held together by 6 foundation points. With this technique we achieved the least number of support columns but the uttermost resistance with 6 big footings.

TEXTILE MATERIAL- GUARANTEE AND SUSTAINABILITY:
In terms of materials we selected a PVC-coated polyester fabric with sufficient resistance to be able to work the forces and achieve a Membrane Structure of 540 sq.

This is the special fabric for Textile Architecture, Type II, manufactured by Mehler Texnologies from Germany, Valmex Type II (7211), with a Mehatop N Lacquered finish which gives the fabric a 20-year guarantee.
All materials used within this project are eco-friendly and completely recyclable therefore, compliant with European law on environment protection and ISO 14001 regulations.

What is unique or complex about the project?

This project is the first that we design without perimeter columns, only with inclined arches and it has been widely accepted by our client, fulfilling all their expectations.
