Please describe the project specifications

The Client was doing an extensive historical renovation on a prominent early 19th century house (with some modern conveniences) and we were contracted to assist. Images from the archives showed traditional window awnings on all the porches. With mostly south and west facing facades, the awnings would have provided much needed cooling before air conditioning. They were looking to recreate the feeling and representation with the awnings, but didn't want to necessarily block the view of the gardens and expansive lawn.

The compromise was to install motorized retractable window awnings. This gave the convenience of having the awnings without blocking the views, the ability to provide shade and rain protection when needed, and to eliminate the need for seasonal maintenance. They chose a simple pattern in a traditional forest green color, which provides a nice historically classic feel to the covers.

There are 11 awnings on each of the 4 porches: 4 awnings 3' wide, 5 awnings 8' wide. The contractor provided junction boxes at each awning to eliminate the visibility of cords. Additionally, we installed a traditional lateral arm over a small outdoor eating area in the flower garden.

What is unique or complex about the project?

This project is unique in the quantity of retractable awnings included. 45 awnings on any project is abundant, let alone residentially- many houses don't even have that many windows. There were challenges in programming and setup of all the motors, but nothing unexpected. One of the greatest difficulties was in mounting the second story awnings, and the limited space to land a ladder.

The owners are extremely pleased with the awnings, and are enjoying them much more than they expected, and have decided to add additional awnings. We were able to successfully include a modern product in a historical preservation without losing the charm. We feel the project turned out quite well and are very proud to have been involved.
