Please describe the project specifications

Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California wanted to overhaul the existing 3,000-seat worship center to create an innovative and Covid-19 safe environment for their ever-growing congregation. Their solution was to replace floor-to-ceiling windows with large airplane hangar doors to allow the main room to convert to an open-air space utilizing the North and South patio areas covered with retractable canopy systems.

Our company was approached by Reeve-Knight Construction to fabricate and install two expansive retractable canopies, plus install a fabric rooftop over an adjacent baptismal changing room. Flame-retardant Awntex 160 fabric by Phifer was selected to cover the combined 10,400 square foot area.

Retractable Canopy (NORTH): Approximately 5,263 square foot shade coverage area. Overall dimensions are 102'-2” wide by 51’-9” projection (by 28'-6" to 32'-6" sloping heights). Nineteen (19) motorized retractable canopies 5'-0" wide by 51’-9” projection, and ten (10) Somfy RTS Motors with Wind Sensors.

Retractable Canopy (SOUTH): Approximately 4,608 square foot shade coverage area. Overall dimensions are 96'-0" wide by 48’-0" projection (by 28'-6" to 32'-6" sloping heights). Eighteen (18) motorized retractable canopies 5'-0" wide by 48'-0" projection, and nine (9) Somfy RTS Motors with Wind Sensors.

Baptismal Changing Room: Approximately 567 square foot shade coverage area with overall dimensions of 21’-0” by 27’-0”.

What is unique or complex about the project?

A total of thirty-seven (37) fabric panels measuring 5-ft. wide by 50-ft. projection are powered by the largest Somfy RTS Motors available in the market. Usually this type of application is utilized in smaller spaces.
