Please describe the project specifications
Jen Lewin Studio contacted us to make a travel cover for the art installation Ursa Major, a 30' tall bear statue made of reclaimed ocean plastic over an aluminum framework. The installation would be traveling to New York and needed to stay clean on the journey.
The cover needed to be durable and lightweight enough to be easily handled. When on the trailer, Ursa Major is 30' long x 12' 6" tall x 11' 7" wide, so making the cover durable and lightweight was a challenge. To solve this issue, two covers were fabricated: a lightweight slip-cover made of Utopia HD and an outer cover made of Top Notch. In addition, the installation has a highly faceted surface with multiple bolt heads on each facet that needed to be reinforced. Four mounting points needed to protrude through the cover to allow the sculpture to mount to the trailer; #15 Lenzip zippers were used to seal the cover at those access points. The cover was attached and tensioned with four IMMI ratchets, three buckle straps, and cordage on the back.
Our customer was extremely pleased with the resulting cover. They loved the relative simplicity of the cover, especially given the complexity of the structure. After making the 70-mile trip home, they emailed to let us know that the cover traveled perfectly without flapping.
