Please describe the project specifications
The Statue of Liberty Embarkation Security Screening Center was conceived and constructed to serve as the primary security gateway for visitors traveling to one of America's most iconic landmarks. Thousands of visitors pass through the facility every day, year-round, undergoing airport-style security screening utilizing multiple magnetometers before boarding ferries to Liberty Island.
The structure consists of a 20m x 30m x 4m (66' x 100' x 13') clear-span structure seamlessly connected to a 10m x 17.5m x 4m (33' x 57' x 13') structure, creating a single, contiguous screening facility. Because the building operates continuously, seven days a week, 365 days per year, it was required to function as a permanent-quality environment despite being a relocatable structure. The facility was engineered to be fully weather-tight, climate-controlled, capable of supporting a 25 psf snow load, and designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 120 mph.
To meet these demanding performance requirements, we designed and installed an insulated inflatable Thermal Roof system that significantly enhanced both thermal efficiency and snow-load performance. The structure was further equipped with insulated thermal wall panels and expansive glass wall sections overlooking New York Harbor, providing visitors with unobstructed views of the Statue of Liberty while maintaining a comfortable interior environment throughout the year.
The project site presented significant challenges. Due to uneven grades and the potential for flooding within the harbor environment, a raised, engineered flooring system manufactured by Granite Industries was installed to create a level and stable foundation. ADA-compliant aluminum ramps and stair systems were incorporated throughout the facility, providing safe and accessible circulation while accommodating the exceptionally high daily visitor volume.
Located within a National Park Service property and exposed to the harsh conditions of New York Harbor, every component of the project was required to withstand a highly corrosive marine environment while meeting rigorous public-use standards. The structure was subjected to extensive scrutiny by the Prime Contractor, the National Park Service, and their architects and engineers. Every aspect of the design, engineering, materials, and construction methodology underwent a detailed submittal and review process to ensure compliance with stringent federal requirements.
Successful completion of the project required extraordinary collaboration among our team and key project partners, including Losberger US, Granite Industries, Epic Flooring, Handi-Ramp, PermaTherm, Industrial Gutters and Fred's Tents. Together, we developed innovative solutions to satisfy the exacting performance, safety, accessibility, and durability standards mandated by the National Park Service.
Construction was carried out over a six-month period during one of the most severe winters experienced in New York City in the past fifty years. Despite extreme weather conditions, logistical challenges, and the complexity of working within an active public park and transportation hub, our team remained committed to delivering a facility of the highest quality.
The result is a highly functional, architecturally attractive, and durable screening facility that continues to serve thousands of visitors daily while providing a safe, comfortable, and welcoming introduction to one of the world's most recognized landmarks. The completed project exceeded the customer's expectations and stands as a testament to the ingenuity, dedication, and technical expertise of everyone involved.
