Please describe the project specifications

Fabricated and installed 4 HDPE sunshades on existing ice rink structure. The shades are vertical and cover approximately 4560 sq ft. Commercial 95 340 Fire Retardant mesh with cable incorporated into sewn pocket to create catenary curve in the sails to tension the fabric.

Provide shade on an outdoor ice rink and recreation area during specific times of the day during specific dates. The client requested a solution to keep the sunshine off the covered outdoor ice rink to prevent melting. The venue was designed as a multi-purpose facility for concerts, festivals, and other entertaining events. The Sunshades provide spectators protection from the sun and wind.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Engineering and shape were the main factors. Creating attachment methods on existing structure was also a challenge. Careful consideration for dispersing the loads created by the panels onto the building was key to the success of the project. Our engineer had to work with the engineer of record for the building very closely. Sun studies were run to make sure we provided shading for the desired area during requested times of the year.

This state-of-the-art facility features 4 NHL sized indoor ice sheets in addition to the outdoor covered rink. By adding these exterior sunshades to the outdoor venue, spectators for all events have additional protection from the sun and wind.
