Please describe the project specifications

This project involved the design, fabrication and installation of five Quad Pole Solar Sail Canopies for the front entrance of the NASA Kennedy Space Center’s Will Call ticket center. Positioned where visitors queue for tickets, these freestanding structures provide essential shade and relief from the Florida sun while guests await entry to one of the world’s most iconic space exploration facilities.

Each canopy features a powder-coated steel frame and measures 12 feet long, 12 feet wide, and were made in varying heights from 10-12 feet high. The high-strength PVC-coated polyester fabric offers long-term durability and resistance to environmental wear. Integrated into each canopy is a 600-Watt solar array that charges a battery bank. The stored energy powers turtle-friendly LED lighting, and a device charging station used by employees of the facility. Engineered to meet Florida Building Code and specific NASA requirements, the structures are designed to withstand 150-mph Category IV hurricane winds. All materials are rated for 100-mph sustained wind loads, ensuring resilience in extreme weather conditions.

The client’s goal was to provide functional shelter and sustainable amenities to enhance the guest experience, while aligning with NASA’s forward-thinking and environmentally responsible mission. This project stands out for its seamless integration of renewable energy technology with high-performance textile architecture, creating a welcoming and eco-conscious entry point to the facility.
