Please describe the project specifications

A local waste reengineering firm was looking for a better solution for transporting waste paint pails.

The firm has a project that collects end of life paints and recycles both the paint, pail and lid
This project was to trial replacing the current single use plastic that was containing the buckets in the stillages.

They approached us for our innovative thinking and sustainability focus that aligned with their values.

Douglas and 3R sourced the mesh from a local focus group with a focus of repurposing used products and Hastings District Council supported the initiative.

What is unique or complex about the project?

This was a unique project as we were collaborating with an innovative group working to create solutions to environmental problems.
Banner mesh is not a product we would typically work with and it being second hand had its own challenges that we had to get used to.
It was great to work with a team of likeminded people keen to remove single use plastic form our landfills.

The team really enjoyed being part of this sustainability project. Not only were they helping with a solution for paints and their packaging, but they were also giving a second life to the used banner mesh and helping keep all these products out of landfills.

Our challenge was to innovate a cover out of a 2nd hand banner mesh that was still able to retain its integrity and keep 100s of paint pails contained in their recycling transport process.
Along with collaborating with the originator of the concept, we also worked with local council to source the banner mesh.

Clients were thrilled with the outcome and even more pleased that it could be done locally – fitting with their goal of local solutions for local problems.
The prototype has been in place for 2 months and they are really excited with how well it is working and how much single use plastic we’ve eliminated from landfills already.
