Please describe the project specifications
The owners of this newly acquired Moody 54 sought more than a traditional sailboat enclosure. Their vision was a structure that would provide exceptional comfort, protection, and functionality while preserving the yacht's elegant lines. Because the owner is tall, maximizing headroom was a primary requirement, yet the enclosure needed to remain visually balanced and seamlessly integrated with the vessel.
The project began with a 3D scan of the cockpit and surrounding deck. Using this data, detailed renderings were created to visualize and refine the concept before fabrication began. Rather than designing a conventional enclosure, the objective was to create an extension of the yacht's architecture.
The dodger was designed to maximize visibility while departing from the typical two-bow configuration. Its aft bow serves as structural support for the forward section of the bimini, creating a rigid and highly stable framework. Strength, visibility, and aesthetics were equally important design considerations throughout the project.
The bimini's primary bow originates at the aft end of the cockpit, sweeping forward around the cockpit before returning to the deck. A secondary cantilevered bow mirrors this shape, while fore-and-aft struts tie the structure together and support additional intermediate bows. The result is a visually striking framework that creates exceptional headroom and a spacious feel without compromising the yacht's appearance.
Every frame component was bent by hand to match the curves established during the digital design process. Polycarbonate front windows provide outstanding visibility and durability, while Strataglass enclosure panels maximize clarity throughout the cockpit. The side panels aft of the dodger follow the sweeping shape of the framework, creating a seamless transition between the dodger and bimini. These panels also hinge open like doors, providing easy access between the cockpit and side decks without disrupting the enclosure's clean lines.
The completed enclosure feels like a natural extension of the Moody 54 itself. The flowing framework, expansive sightlines, and generous interior volume transform the cockpit into a comfortable cruising space while maintaining the yacht's distinctive profile. By combining advanced digital design, innovative structural solutions, and meticulous craftsmanship, the project delivers a truly custom enclosure that enhances both the beauty and functionality of the yacht.
