Please describe the project specifications

Rondweg Emmen (N391) connects with the N34. The level crossing has been converted into a fully-fledged interchange with new connecting roads. The N34 was doubled over one and a half kilometres for this project. The reconstruction of the interchange will improve road safety, traffic flow and accessibility. The delivery is ahead of schedule and within budget.

The client (the province of Drenthe) wanted an improved, safer traffic flow without using, for example, a roundabout or a junction with traffic lights. The solution also had to fit in with the landscape with an intersection as far as possible.

By forming a construction team with the client, contractor and engineering firm, the goal is to create a better design within the planned schedule, and budget and reduce the CO2 emissions.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The main client, contractor, an engineering firm and our company looked at the project holistically. Taking into account the different stakeholders and minimizing the impact on the environment. The original design was to use heavy Berlin walls and steel sheet piling. Working closely with the contractor and engineer, it was possible to optimize the retaining wall by reducing cost and CO2 emissions. The early involvement and the use of the 3D Revit model helped the contractor and engineers to plan construction phases more efficient. This limited any possible issues during construction, which led to the project being on time and within budget.
