Please describe the project specifications

Working with Rhode Partners Architects, we developed the design concept of a suspended tensile canopy to cover the drop off parking at the New Loren Hotel at Lady Bird Lake in Austin TX. The entire canopy was designed to be suspended from the upper levels of the surrounding hotel structure using a series of long cables inspired by spider webs in nature. A series of circular polycarbonate openings highlight where the cable connections occur and give another level of transparency to the parking below. The entire canopy is asymmetric and free form to reinforce the natural shape of the canopy. Custom details were developed using stainless steel fittings that tie into the hotel building.

The client wanted a calm and shaded entry area that would allow guests to feel a sense of arrival. By minimizing the number of connections and limiting the ground support to a single column, the canopy was able to provide an open enclosure for arrivals and departures.
