Please describe the project specifications
Community center and multi functional facility for the remote town of Inuvik Northwest Territories 120 miles from the Arctic Circle. To be used year round so needed to be engineered for snow, 130 mph winds and extreme cold arctic conditions.
What is unique or complex about the project?
The client contacted us directly. The engineering requirements for this structure where challenging as the structure needed to sustain some of the worst weather conditions on the planet. Tentnology does all the design, engineering and fabrication in-house so we had complete control of the project. We had custom fabric created to meet the cold and weather conditions and using our proprietary engineering software, were able to build models of the structure and apply with wind and snow forces to create the optimum fabric structure to be safe and secure. Even the delivery of the structure required extra ordinary planning as the goods needed to be loaded onto 2 barges and delivered via river access. Deep permafrost exists which heaves in the fall and contracts in the spring, so a custom anchorage system had to be developed to allow for these changes in the earth/anchorage conditions.
This project commenced in the middle of the Covid shut downs so supply, labor & travel were also a challenge.
These design and engineering challenges alone set this project apart from our more standard applications.
