Please describe the project specifications

This project consisted of a custom cover to protect the helm’s station area for a military lifeboat from retired vessel USS Coral Sea. The client needed a light weight easy to install cover and compact to store for UV and water protection. The fabric of choice was a silicon fabric meeting the needs of protection from the environment, compact storage as well as very light weight. To simplify the cover, the helms station itself was utilized as a “support pole”. This eliminates the need proper placement of an independent pole. Common sense fasteners were installed on the bulkhead of the helms station compartment and both the starboard and port sides. Due to the very rough non-skid surface of the military vessel, additional chafe protection along each edge of the cover was required.

What is unique or complex about the project?

This was a fun and unique project to work on considering the military history of the boat. The military grade non-skid surface introduced unique challenges typically not seen in marine canvas fabrication. Lots of consideration was taken in the chosen materials to meet the clients ease of use needs and to properly secure the cover. In the end the client was quite pleased with the outcome.
