Please describe the project specifications
Himmel Park features a large, structural umbrella supported by a single structural steel column and a framed 20’x36’ canopy.
The City of Tucson, Arizona had planned for amenity upgrades at this City park, which included a new exercise station, and functional shade was necessary for this equipment to be utilized by local residents. Since this structure was located within a historical residential district, the architectural style of the structure needed to blend in with the surrounding community.
What is unique or complex about the project?
Underground utilities, site restrictions and the plan for the equipment located below limited potential footing placements for this structure, so it was decided to cantilever the entire structure on one footing and structural column, placed in the middle of the concrete patio. We worked very closely with our structural engineer and fabrication department to design connection details that made this umbrella structurally sound, yet easy to assemble on site.
The City of Tucson loved this unique installation and community residents enjoy the added benefit of both functional shade and new park amenities. We have continued our positive working relationship with the City of Tucson by being one of their primary shade providers.
