Project Description:
TRX City Park is Kuala Lumpur’s newest urban park experience. Located on the rooftop of The Exchange TRX mall, it spans more than ten acres of open space and is the largest rooftop public park in Southeast Asia. It is designed as a multi-level park atop the mall's roof and service buildings, offering a contemporary space that integrates retail activation with a curated program of activities. The landscape and planting design draw inspiration from diverse Malaysian habitats, giving the destination a unique sense of place and a sustainable environment.
Green roofing is an eco-friendly solution. It excels in stormwater management, helps mitigate the urban heat island effect, enhances air quality, preserves biodiversity, extends roof lifespan, and improves aesthetics. The project aims to transform TRX City Park into a green destination that conserves local flora and fauna using geosynthetic solutions—specifically HDPE geomembrane barriers and drainage geocomposite materials—to enhance biodiversity and community well-being for sustainable urban development in Metropolitan Kuala Lumpur. A waterproof geomembrane is the most crucial element in green roofs, as it prevents water infiltration from the top layers. Water tightness is therefore its most fundamental characteristic. Furthermore, an anti-root membrane provides resistance to root penetration, which can physically or damage the waterproof geomembrane. High durability is essential to ensure the long-lasting performance of the geomembrane as a primary water barrier.
The TRX City Park project required high-performance waterproofing as a part of its rooftop green roof system. Solmax manufactured and supplied 6,720 m2 of GSE® HD black smooth geomembrane as the primary roof barrier layer, which was installed by a local specialist contractor, Wil-Key International Sdn. Bhd. The geomembrane protects the underlying structure from water ingress while supporting the long-term performance of the landscaped rooftop system. The combination of scale and installation complexity set this project apart. The work involved lining a 6,720 m2 rooftop area at significant elevation. Limited working space, wind exposure, controlled lifting operations, and strict safety requirements complicated material handling and installation. In addition, frequent rainfall, high humidity, and wet conditions created risks for welding quality and schedule performance, as the process requires dry surfaces and stable conditions.
Thus, the smooth GSE HD geomembrane was selected for its consistent manufacturing quality, weldability, durability, and suitability for Malaysia’s humid tropical climate. Its reliable field welding performance enabled the installation team to resume work efficiently after weather interruptions without compromising seam integrity or waterproof performance. The project was completed within the two months planned. The completed green-roof barrier system provides durable, long-term waterproofing protection for the structure while helping the project achieve green-infrastructure benefits. These include improved stormwater management, reduced heat gain and energy demand, support for biodiversity, and a longer roof service life. The result is a resilient rooftop landscape solution that combines engineered containment performance with environmental value.
