Please describe the project specifications
We shaded our first patio for Gary Farrell Winery in 2016. In the fall of 2021, they approached us again, this time seeking a sail design for their new Overlook Club Patio situated atop the scenic mountainside of the Russian River Valley. History had shown us that they were a conservative group, so we presented them with three relatively simple design options, alongside a more unconventional design affectionately dubbed "The Fishtail" sail. After careful consideration, they took a leap of faith and chose "The Fishtail". After years of observing the incredible sail and fabric art in our industry, our goal was to infuse a more artistic flair into typical shade sail functionality.
Once the design phase was complete, we collaborated closely with our skilled sail pattern developer to ensure the design translated seamlessly into reality. Precise measurements were crucial in this process. Subsequently, our talented sail fabricator took the reins to bring the design to life. The most challenging aspect of the installation was maintaining tight, flat circle corners to allow the fishtail to descend while keeping the upper part of the sail stable. Several experiments were conducted to determine the best approach. Our combined dedication and expertise paid off. We successfully installed the perfect fishtail sail on our first attempt.
However, the sail was only half of the equation. The engineering aspect was equally remarkable. The structure was supported by six 10" steel columns, with an additional 12" steel moment frame measuring 12' tall by 30' long supporting the sail array along the entry portico. The footings, all 30" diameter, ranged from 8'3" to 13'6" in depth. It was appropriately commented that "The beauty is on the top and the brawn in down below!"
Gary Farrell Winery is exceedingly happy with the project, and the people were incredible to work with. We look forward to their next patio to come our way.
