Please describe the project specifications
Designed, fabricated and installed two fabric tension shade sails measuring 20’ x 15‘each. The HDPE shade fabric is Commercial 95-340 FR Natural. Supporting the sails are three 4” x 4” painted steel beams approximately 20’ long. The beams are supported by steel saddle brackets that were welded to 14” x 14” wall plates.
The restaurant requested an outdoor shade structure for their upper patio dining area to provide sun protection for customers. The shade sails are a flexible solution that can be easily removed in the winter months and reinstalled in the spring.
The Shade Sail structure spanned between two old brick buildings which made anchoring a challenge. The initial design to anchor the Sails directly to the existing walls was not given engineering approval. The design solution was to span structural beams between the two buildings. Attachment tabs were welded to the beams and then set into steel saddle brackets which were part of the wall plate assembly. The tension fabric was attached to the steel tabs instead of directly to the walls. By transferring the structural loads from the existing walls to the beams, the design was ultimately given engineering approval.
The restaurant owner is excited about the additional seating capacity that is leading to increased revenue. Their customers are more comfortable and enjoy the sun protection which enhances customer satisfaction and loyalty. This solution is minimal maintenance and adds to the restaurant’s curb appeal being located on a busy street.
