Please describe the project specifications

The client requested a retractable option to cover the side of their swimming pool to get tamariki safe from the sun while the rest of the class was swimming.

What is unique or complex about the project?

This was a unique and highly collaborative project due to the structural requirements involved in supporting the awnings. During the school’s pool fencing upgrade, we worked closely with the fencing contractor to extend and upgrade the support posts to structural steel, allowing them to carry three large lateral arm awnings designed to provide shade along the pool edge.

To create a secure mounting system, we fabricated and installed a powder-coated beam between the steel posts, providing a strong and visually seamless fixing point for the awning brackets. As the awnings were fully motorised, coordination with the electrical contractor was essential to ensure power was discreetly routed through the posts and along the rear beam to each unit.

For added safety and peace of mind, motion sensors were integrated into the system to automatically respond to adverse weather conditions while the awnings are in use. The completed installation has delivered a practical, durable, and highly functional shaded space that has exceeded expectations for both the school and its tamariki.
