The customer wanted a small shade sail to cover tiled a deck area for shade during the summer months. The building was a terraced apartment and the sail was to be mounted on middle level. There were bedrooms below the deck so we couldn’t simply install posts into the ground. We designed a special welded bracket and wall mounted post to mount the sail on one side, and along with fixings to a wooden frame supporting a louvre roof, we were able to install the sail. Two posts were mounted to the outside concrete wall of the downstairs apartment, and outside of the glass balustrade.
The main goal was to provide shade for the family entertaining area during the summer. Customer had specific position requirements for the posts so they didn’t impact on the second floor internal pool.
The shade sail was to be mounted on the middle floor of a terraced apartment. There was limited room for us to position the post on the outside of the wall to ensure it cleared the glass balustrade but did not impede the driveway below. As we were mounting the posts to the wall below the glass of the balustrade, the angle had to be shallow, far enough out to clear the glass balustrade if the posts flexed in the wind and give the sail good tension, but close enough to the house to leave the driveway clear and so it wasn’t dangerous for our installers to mount the sail (leaning over the glass balustrade on a second floor deck). We tacked the post together to test it onsite and when we were happy with the angle the post and bracket were sent off to the powder coaters.
We prefer to use steel posts for our shade sails, but as the posts were being mounted to the concrete wall, we opted for aluminium instead. We started with a steel post, and on the site check visit, to test the design and angle, three installers struggled to hold the steel post in position, so we swapped it out for aluminium to reduce the load on the wall.
The sail ended up quite small as we couldn’t position the posts too close to the second floor internal pool.
