Please describe the project specifications
A boat builder approached us with a new concept for a Coastguard vessel under construction. They wanted to move away from the traditional inflatable fender system and create a more durable alternative using a shaped foam profile, covered to retain the familiar inflatable tube look.
Our role covered concept development, material selection, manufacture, and installation. The aim was to reduce the ongoing issues of punctures, repairs, and maintenance, while creating a rigid, robust fender system with improved longevity and a cleaner, more dependable finish.
What is unique or complex about the project?
This project caught our attention because we enjoy taking on work that pushes us outside our usual process. With no previous template to follow, we sought advice, worked through the foam profile design, and developed a covered fender concept that would meet the client’s brief.
The installation was three hours away, with no practical opportunity for a test fit, so accuracy was critical from the start. The prep work was extensive, including scuffing the materials and carefully applying Bostik adhesive to achieve a strong bond. The finished result delivered exactly what the client wanted, and Coastguard were very happy with the outcome.
