The client owns a modern architectural home in a high-wind alpine resort township in the Southern Lakes region. It's their main residence, but the owners travel frequently and the property is regularly used by friends and guests during their absences. The brief was to deliver a substantial outdoor shade structure for the home's main outdoor living area — reliable protection from the strong north-westerly summer sun, designed to blend into the surrounding alpine landscape rather than dominate it.
Critically, the client wanted a hands-off solution. Something that could be left in place year-round, that guests could enjoy without needing instructions, and that would protect itself in the region's notoriously volatile weather without anyone having to be home to intervene.
This is a 38 m² motorised retractable shade sail, rectangular in plan at roughly 6.7 m × 5.7 m, configured with a diagonal supporting shaft and supported in a wall-and-post arrangement. It was installed in November 2025 and tied into the home's modern architecture and smart home system. The fabric specification is technical-grade: a polyester base with a water-repellent nano coating, self-cleaning surface treatment, 100% opacity for full shade, UPF 50+ UV protection, and high tear resistance with a light and weather fastness rating of 7–8 on the eight-point scale. A beige colour was selected to recede into the surrounding landscape rather than announce itself.


What is unique or complex about the project?

What sets the project apart from a typical shade installation is the level of autonomy designed into the system. The sail is controlled by a dedicated weather station that monitors wind speed, rain, and sun in real time, and is also fully integrated with the home's smart system — accessible via app, voice control, and remote operation. The auto-retract threshold is set at 40 km/h with the ability to adjust it to suit the client's comfort level over time. When the wind picks up, the sail retracts itself automatically. When the weather settles, it re-extends on schedule or on demand. In a region where alpine weather can turn within minutes, this is important.

The site sits in a high-wind exposure zone where standard shade products simply don't last. A 38 m² fabric area is a substantial span for a single retractable sail and puts real engineering demands on the support structure, the shaft and motor system, and the fabric tensioning. We solved this with a wall-and-post hybrid configuration that anchors the sail into the home's structural envelope on one side and into properly engineered post footings on the other, with a diagonal shaft running across the rectangular sail to manage tension and travel cleanly during extension and retraction. Loads are distributed correctly across the building and the ground, and the motorised system is sized for the span. The autonomous wind retraction means the sail is never exposed to loads beyond its safe operating range.
The second challenge was the design integration brief — making something this large feel quiet against modern alpine architecture. The fabric colour, the shaft profile, and the placement of the post all had to read as part of the home rather than added to it. The diagonal shaft geometry was chosen partly for engineering reasons and partly because it produces clean, considered lines that complement modern architectural detailing.
The third challenge was the use pattern. Because the home is regularly occupied by guests when the owners are travelling, the system had to be genuinely zero-thought from a user's perspective. A guest staying for a weekend should be able to enjoy the shade without ever needing to think about wind, weather, or operation. The smart home and weather station integration delivers exactly that — the sail manages itself.

The client asked for hands-off shade. What they got is an autonomous outdoor living system that protects itself, blends into its landscape, and removes the cognitive load of weather management from both the owners and their guests. The home is now usable as an outdoor living space across the full alpine summer without anyone needing to monitor the forecast, run out to retract sails, or worry about damage during a sudden front. In winter the sail simply stays retracted and tolerates snow on the closed shaft without issue. Year-round, the system requires no intervention.
The client is very happy with the result. For a substantial shade installation on a modern alpine home in a high-wind environment, this represents the upper end of what current retractable shade technology can deliver — not just shade, but genuinely autonomous outdoor climate control.
