The developers of the 800 Brickell property—in the heart of Miami’s buzzing financial district and a skip away from upscale shopping at Brickell City Centre—required a retractable fabric canopy system integrated with a decorative trellis for their new Amazónico Miami tropical rainforest-themed outdoor restaurant. RCC and Associates, the general contractor on the project reached out to our company to request a proposal for the design, fabrication and installation of a retractable fabric canopy system. Amazónico Miami will join its illustrious Amazónico siblings in London, Dubai, Monte Carlo, and Madrid.

For this project our companies designed, fabricated and installed two independently operable En-Fold® retractable canopy units. Unit 1: 33’-9 3/4” in extension by 64’-0 5/8” wide as well as the steel support structure. Unit 2: 20’-4 5/8 in extension by 58’-3 5/8” wide. Together they afford 3,355 square feet of restaurant terrace protection from winds of up to 115mph in the extended position, rain showers and excessive sun exposure.

Working closely together our companies integrated the new structural steel to support the two En-Fold® retractable canopy systems into the existing courtyard space. The two En-Fold units meet in the center at a 63’ long steel HSS beam supported by two HSS 12” x 12” steel columns. The steel columns also had to be designed to support the weight, and wind loads of the organic tree-like trellis structures. One of the En-Fold units abuts a curved glass wall, so a custom steel truss, clad with a multi-wall polycarbonate system was carefully designed and installed to support the canopy loads and seal out any water infiltration along the existing north building’s curved storefront glazing façade.

The completed En-Fold® retractable canopy’s unique bi-axially tensioned fabric soars over nearly the entire ground-floor terrace and the Amazónico restaurant’s lush tropical rainforest foliage, keeping dining patrons dry and shaded so they can relax and enjoy the exotic ambience. Or magically at the press of a button, the En-Fold retracts to reveal blue sky and warm Florida sun!
