Please describe the project specifications
Our company was asked to design a canopy that could have a cantilevered roof system that reached 27' feet in coverage, maintained waterproof coverage while being built on a site with elevation changes and while meeting the strict seismic loading requirements of California.
We designed a 28' wide x 60' long that is over 20' tall at the peak of the structure.
Meeting a moving schedule and site that had the elevation and dimensions change repeatedly created some opportunities for the engineering team and there were changes in fabrication throughout the design period.
The structure required numerous reiteration and engineering specialists to meet specific code requirements.
The back wall connections allowed for a textile gutter to be created and aid drainage from the block structure all while keeping the delivery program functioning and operational
What is unique or complex about the project?
Some of the specialty items we had to design for and consistently change the design to meet the final evolution of the project:
- Special loading and re-enforced eave steel construction
- Schedule required a 2 day build period
- Elevation changes required for each column location
- Steel purlin and connection to meet elevation changes
- Water proof membrane gutter on back wall
Our company may have built much larger structures, but the degree of complexity involving the ramps, concrete and build around had this canopy with some of tighter tolerances of any of our projects. We found the last minute changes and tight scheduling to be a challenge and extremely fulfilling when the project was declared a major success.
