Please describe the project specifications
The client wanted to build an innovative town centre sensory space and garden which engages all the senses beside the new Rollerston town library Te Ara Atea featuring raised gardens with edible plants, outdoor instruments, water and colour features. To be enjoyed by the whole community with design input from nine local primary schools including Waitaha School allowing for those who are neurodiverse to be part of the community space in a comfortable way incorporating a custom umbrella to shade part of the turf and paths so users can relax under it while experiencing the garden.
What is unique or complex about the project?
Challenging the normal in a public space with the creative opportunity to design and build a custom umbrella in deep purple with cream and pink textile with Dylan Robinson so the whole community can benefit has been a rewarding fun experience. Building an umbrella that is a rotating cantilevered style so wheelchair access is easy and the ability to handle gale force winds over 140kph and handle snow loads and still be able to rotate around the space while enjoying the different textures, fragrances and sounds of a-different style of garden in a public space has been exciting for our small team.
