Please describe the project specifications

Our customer a homeowner in Lynwood, Washington, USA requested a patio cover with lights and an overhang on one side. We explained and showed the customer, using our videos, why a retractable patio cover in his case is a better choice than a fixed/permanent patio cover. He liked the idea and then asked for a quote for the retractable version. Included in the quote were HDD LED lights and a retractable overhang on one side of the pergola. The client requested a blackout fabric to keep it darker under the pergola and also wanted lights to have light control at night as needed. You will note from one of the pictures that the house is A-framed on the one side and the size of the patio is slightly wider than the house. To cover this slightly wider area we manufactured the retractable pergola 1 meter wider than the house so that the pergola fabric would cover the fireplace located within this slightly wider area.

The pergola needed to attach a certain distance above the bay window so that the fabric would not drag along the top of the bay window when being extended and retracted.

Fire retardant fabric was requested due to the fireplace even though it was not required to meet local residential fire codes.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Our company entered the project in the IAA competition as it was a somewhat unusual since the retractable pergola extended past the roofline on one side. We have done this in the past with a fixed pergola but not with a retractable pergola.

We also entered this project as the customer, after installation, was extremely happy saying "I now have excellent waterproof protection from the rain since it rains a lot here in Washington State". He also said that he would like in the future to enclose the space with sliding glass doors so that the heat does not escape from the heat generated by the heaters he installed on the wall to keep the space warm in the winter. Our company offers both framed and frameless sliding glass doors for most of our retractable roof pergola systems.
