Please describe the project specifications

A Redmond, Washington residential homeowner requested a free-standing pergola to help with the drizzle that they receive a good part of the year. In fact, as the customer stated: “Redmond, receives more rain than the US national average.”

The customer, based on their builder’s advice, did not want to attach the beams/guides/rafters to the wall based on the specialty type of house construction so a free-standing pergola was best. The pergola is higher in the rear than in the front to allow for enough pitch for the bottom of the front post rainwater runoff. The Somfy RTS motor is hidden inside a motor box which is then hidden by the fabric in the rear.

The homeowner requested LED lighting with a dimmer switch and mentioned they would add a fire pit under the retractable pergola to help stay warm in the winter months. It was explained to the customer that the fire pit flame should be kept low so as not to burn or damage the fabric. Just in case, we used a fire-retardant fabric for this application. The fabric color chosen was designed to coordinate with the paint color of the house. The fabric Stam 6002 has a grainy texture and a matt finish for a natural, cotton-like effect. Its PVDF varnish makes outdoor stains (tree sap, dead leaves, etc.) easy to clean something that was important to the client as they have a lot of trees in the area.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Most residential retractable pergola installations are attached so it was unusual to install this pergola free standing. We wanted to meet the customer's request and did so.

As you can see from two of the pictures the customer uses the LED lights at night and stays warm using their fire pit.

The homeowners were in high spirits after the install and stated they were delighted with the product quality and service received.
