Please describe the project specifications

Our company was approached by EDSA, a large landscape architecture firm to provide a recommendation for 6 retractable free-standing pergola cover systems to be installed poolside into custom-made steel structures as provided by a 3rd party. The location was the new soon-to-be-constructed (at the time) upscale Bristol Tower in Palm Beach, Florida.

The unique aspect of this project was that the pergola guides and fabric needed to be installed sloping to the rear (opposite of a normal front sloping installation) away from the pool and instead into the plant beds in the rear. We worked with the component manufacturers' engineers to design a system that could be installed in this manner. One of the key aspects of the project was that since the motors are installed in the rear a custom-made “flap” system was designed to protect the motors from rain.

What is unique or complex about the project?

We love a challenge and that is why we measured and installed this project and entered the competition. This project was a challenge because our systems had to be manufactured in Europe precisely to the mm as they were being installed into welded steel structures as provided by others.

Not only did our company need to wait until the steel structures were installed but we also had to wait until the teak wood lattice was installed above our retractable fabric pergola covers.

Drilling into steel structures was time-consuming and a lot of drill bits were used as they wear out fast when attaching to steel.

The sub-contractor and Bristol Tower management were both very complimentary with the results.
