Please describe the project specifications

This project is a custom Ferry Dock Canopy that is 59’-0” x 11’-10” and a total height of 10’-2 1/4” high. It is built of aluminum framing and anchored to the concrete dock. The canopy has arched trusses and has mesh drop screens to provide weather protection for luggage, when it raining. The fabric for the top of the canopy is Patio 538 Parchment by Herculite and for the screens, Textilene 90 – Dusk Grey.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The client wanted a new dock canopy for their resort. They have their own ferry and needed a canopy that would welcome guests and be pleasing to the eyes, while being functional for the staff. With the ferry making frequent trips throughout the day, the resort also wanted the new canopy to provide shade and rain protection for guests, luggage and shipments that would be arriving or departing. The tropics bring blowing rain, so the client also wanted some additional weather protection on the ends and sides of the canopy, to protect guests and their luggage as they arrive or leave the resort.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The canopy was custom designed and fabricated in (6) sections and then put together at the project site. The canopy is 59’-0” long x 11’-10” wide. Only 2 sections of frame work fit into a shipping container, so (3) shipping containers were needed for framing, posts, tools and cover. Aluminum framing was powder coated with a textured white finish, since the project is adjacent to the ocean and salt spray. Frame work sections were sistered together and bolted. The top of the canopy is arched and designed for quick removal of the fabric; if necessary for heavy tropical weather. Base plates are gusseted for strength. Custom screens were fitted on the ends of the canopy and the side sections, for weather protection of guests, luggage and shipments arriving with the ferry.

What were the results of the project?

The resort and staff are very satisfied with the new Ferry Dock canopy. It provides the shade and weather solution that the client needed for their dock area. Guests and staff are “welcomed” in comfort under this canopy at this beautiful tropical resort. They can disembark and embark with ease, with no waiting in the hot tropical sun or rain showers during rainy season.
