Please describe the project specifications

A multi-storied outdoor structure for the Sheraton Suites Hotel in Cuyahoga Falls, OH, right above the falls of the Cuyahoga River.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The customer wanted to replace an old seasonal stationary awning covering an outdoor bar and restaurant with something larger that could remain installed year round. The project is right on the river walk, and hosts a variety of events from kayak races to parties and weddings.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The client wanted all the seating levels to be protected, yet didn't want to block the view of the river from underneath. The complexity in this project is that this covers a 3-elevation terrace over the existing bar. With a 41' wide x 50' footprint, the awning drops 16' from the peak to the lower front by the river. The upper rear patio returns back down to help block the western setting sun.

Also complex was while the upper posts attached to the concrete patio, the lower posts actually needed to attach into the retention flood wall of the river. While we had assumed there would be some difficulty with getting approval for a more modern structure in the historical district, it proved to be relatively smooth in working with the city. Also, despite the active worksite, the bar was open every day at 4pm, including hosting the mayor for a party with the half built structure.

What were the results of the project?

The customer is delighted with the outcome. We achieved all that they were seeking to accomplish and have created an attractive, functional, and protected space that enhances the hotel's offerings by the river. The powder coated steel structure is robust and sturdy, while the cover fits great. They have nothing but good things to say about the project.
