What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

Johnson & Johnson Medical Device Companies exhibit at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) annual meeting to connect with the 14,000 domestic and international orthopedic surgeons and healthcare professionals at the show.

Specific objectives for Johnson & Johnson’s new exhibit at AAOS 2018 were:
• Showcase new products
• Increase awareness of DePuy Synthes products (one of the Johnson & Johnson Medical Device Companies)
• Portray the company’s patient-centric, nurturing approach
• Create a commanding presence on the show floor

What is unique or complex about the project?

In thinking about its new trade show exhibit, Johnson & Johnson liked the look of permanent structures with a woven façade—architecture that would convey the company’s high tech capabilities as well as its commitment to nurturing patients back to health.

Designers knew that actual woven façades would be heavy, prone to damage, and expensive to ship and install at trade shows. Instead, they engineered lightweight fabric architecture that mimicked high-end permanent structures—for a fraction of the cost.

Twenty-four foot tall curved walls, custom-printed with textured graphics, define the Innovation Pavilion, a new product showcase. The structure captures attention and the graphics subconsciously convey that Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices help patients weave their lives back together again.

A blue ribbon header inside the fabric arches welcomes visitors as they approach the Innovation Pavilion and orients them to specific areas of interest once they are inside. A flat fabric disc hung overhead makes casual meeting areas feel more contained and intimate.

A serpentine ribbon header highlights the DePuy Synthes brand, physically connecting it with the Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices umbrella brand. The header weaves its way around four pods that use graphics on tension fabric walls to instantly communicate their individual product focus.

What were the results of the project?

By using fabric architecture, Johnson & Johnson was able to achieve the look and feel they wanted in a way that was logistically and financially possible, especially important for a temporary project that needed to be installed quickly.

Johnson & Johnson drove more traffic, generated interest in its new products, and conducted more face-to-face meetings with its new exhibit at at AAOS 2018.
