Please describe the project specifications

This project features a custom Corradi B-Space retractable canopy that is 37’-3” wide x 29’-2” projection. This is installed over the right outside veranda area of David’s Deep Blue Restaurant at the Morritt’s Resort, in Grand Cayman. The project has a maximum height of 15’-2” at the back and 8’-0” at the front of the canopy. The frame structure, components and fabric are all white. Fabric is White Eclissi.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

The client has two patio areas overlooking the water off of the dining room of David’s Deep Blue Restaurant, there at the Morritt’s Resort. The restaurant is right on the water, with breath taking views overlooking the Caribbean Sea. This area is used throughout the year for outdoor breakfasts, dining and special events. Located in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, in the Tropics; the client needed sun and weather protection so their guests could still enjoy eating alfresco anytime of the day.

What is unique or complex about the project?

Being located in the Caribbean, it was very important to get all of the details, dimensions, measurements and preparation for the project correctly the first time. There had to be good coordination for fabrication, packaging, shipping, receiving all of the materials, work permits, transportation and other logistics for the crew to stay and install the frame. Since this resort hotel and timeshare is always very busy, the project had to be installed within a week. The front columns for the retractable patio canopy had to be connected outside of the patio railing to a concrete beam below. Custom designed receiver plates were designed for the columns to attach to the existing concrete beam. The frame is designed with heavy duty Corradi B-space aluminum frames, with (4) posts spanning the front of the canopy where the runners connect to the front. A special up-flap was designed on one side to ensure that the connection between the building and retractable canopy are waterproof. Special Pergotenda lights are pre-wired throughout this canopy. They are for outdoor use and come with 4 pre-set intensity levels and dimmer. They are perfectly integrated with the retractable canopy system.

What were the results of the project?

This custom retractable canopy transformed the outdoor veranda area into just what the client needed and wanted. The area is now usable throughout the year. Guests can now enjoy the breath taking views without the intense heat of the sun. Special occasions and events booked at the restaurant do not have to be cancelled, because bookings can be kept rain or shine. The restaurant now has total flexibility to open or close the canopy at the touch of a button. The canopy over the veranda area allows guests to make memories and enjoy their vacation in a “Piece of Paradise”. This retractable system was the perfect solution that the client wanted for its casual, yet elegant atmosphere. They love it so much, they ordered another canopy for the other patio space to the left!
