Please describe the project specifications

Auburn University engaged Mahaffey to build a temporary conference center for the Auburn Hotel while the hotel conference center was being renovated. We proposed and presented a design plan for the Conference Center Project that consisted of three structures. It featured a huge marquee measuring 82’ x 150 that would be divided into five separate rooms for the main events area. Additionally, we added a 16’ x 16’ walkway with a canopy over the main area entrance and a satellite restroom facility across from the main marquee. The design also featured glass fabric, hard sides, and interior doors.

What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?

Auburn University requested a temporary conference center that could be used for six months while the hotel conference center was unavailable. The Conference Center Project would need to accommodate small and large events. It was expected that the site would be comfortable and offer amenities expected from a hotel such as HVAC and restroom facilities. The client also requested a design that fit the expectations of the Auburn community and guests.

What is unique or complex about the project?

The University wanted the site erected on the parking lot adjacent to the Auburn Hotel. This brought some complexities to the project because the hotel was open and the parking lot was busy with traffic throughout the construction process.
The other complication involved an immovable light pole that we were forced to design and build around and a sizeable slope that required engineering to construct level floors for the main structure.
Time was also a complication. From the day we began, the construction timeline was fourteen days to completion. It was a lot to accomplish, but the Mahaffey team succeeded.

What were the results of the project?

Auburn University is elated with the Conference Center Project. The structure blends nicely with the environment and is highly functioning as a busy conference center with events planned almost daily.
The very first event happened on the heels of our completion date. It was a very important retirement party for the University’s president. Staged in the larger ballroom and including an elegant dinner, the event couldn’t have been more beautiful. And we are pleased to announce that the President’s retirement went off without a hitch!
