Please describe the project specifications
Combining function and style, the very contemporary SQK 40 SunSquare covers the stage area of Stony Point Fashion Park in Richmond, Virginia. This high-end outdoor motorized shade system is made of marine grade stainless steel. SunSquare Systems, designed by award winner industrial designer Gerald Wurz, are the only patented sails, triangle or rectangle, that retract with the wind, by remote control and/or hand crank. These sleek shade sails retract automatically when wind gusts reach 25 mph and have 5 redundancies to close down in case of motor failure.
What was the purpose of this project? What did the client request?
The purpose of this project was to create a contemporary entertainment area where musicians and entertainers can perform. The client wanted to create a designated area for entertainment that was both aesthetically appealing and functional, keeping performers and visitors shaded and protected from the sun.
What is unique or complex about the project?
This project is unique because the product itself is unique. This luxury shade sail is manufactured in Vienna, Austria and has been installed in only 15,000 locations in Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, the US and South America. Made of the highest quality Marine Grade 316 Stainless Steel and Aluminum, SunSquare Systems are the only patented sails to retract automatically.
What were the results of the project?
This SunSquare created a contemporary area where performers and visitors can gather for Summer shows and events. When the area isn't being used for entertainment purposes, this architectural state-of-the-art SunSquare still looks ultra-sleek and seamlessly matches the design of the mall.
